EAST COUNTY WIND WALKERS

MINUTES OF MAY 14, 2009

In attendance were:  Janet Winner, Carol Cullison, Jean Jensen, Regina Blake, Sharon Ducy, Judy Hamilton, Beverly Russell, Claudia Brooks, Dave Saks, Phyllis Saks, Dick Hawes, Nancy Hawes, Rebecca Shierman, Susan Olson, and Micheil-Ann Gill.

President Micheil-Ann welcomed everyone.  Everyone talked of their last walks.

1.         Secretary’s Minutes.  There is one correction to the April Minutes.  Carol’s last name was misspelled and should be Cullison.  Janet made a motion that the Secretary’s Minutes be accepted as corrected; Jean seconded the motion.

2.         Treasurer’s Report.  Claudia gave the Treasurer’s Report.  Our bank balance is $1,695.13 as of May 14, 2009.  Regina made a motion that the Treasurer’s Report be accepted as read; Sharon seconded the motion.

3.         OTSVA Report.  The OTSVA Report was given by Micheil-Ann and the highlights of the May 9, 2009 meeting were:

·                     The AVA stamp is for the use of those walkers who pay the credit fee only.  The WOC books may be purchased by free walkers but the event stamp must be handwritten in the book.

·                     The sanctioning window for 2010 YREs opens June 1.

·                     The Pathfinder is having financial problems.

·                     Nominations for the Oregon Flame Awards are needed by the end of May.

·                     The Publicity Committee remains vacant and needs a chair and team members.

·                     The next OTSVA meeting will be held in Gresham on July 18 after the Gresham Arts Festival Walk.

Micheil-Ann will send the proxy form to Dick Baker for voting at the conference in June.

Micheil-Ann sent a thank you letter on behalf of the club to Mt. Hood Community College thanking them for letting us host a walk at the College for the club’s 20th anniversary.

4.         Walk-Up Dates.

Anniversary Walk.  The College was happy that we had the walk there.  They thought everyone was so friendly and we thought the same of the personnel that worked there.  They were pleased with how it was all cleaned up.  If we want to run another walk out of there, we could, and we have the potential of having a YRE event starting from there.  Micheil-Ann took a lot of pictures of the College walk and will upload them to the website.

Arts Festival Walk.  Regina passed around a sign-up sheet for workers.  She will obtain the required permit on Monday.  She brought brochures for anyone wanting to take them to their place of business or wherever, and the brochures will be put in the start boxes of the YREs.  A workers walk is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, 2009, at 1:00, meeting at the Gresham City Hall.

Mt. Tabor Walk.  Janet asked about the ad in the Pathfinder.  Micheil-Ann said she would be receiving the ad prior to the event for proofing before it would be placed in the Pathfinder.  Janet sent around a work sheet for workers.  Janet has created a new worker position that Marilyn will handle.  Because there are so many other events going on that weekend, Marilyn will stay all day and will answer questions that come up, like where the dog park is, etc.  Parking at the event is not good.  People may need to park in the neighborhood and walk uphill to the start point.  The checkpoint will be at the finish table.  There will be two loops.  The people who are on the start table should come at 7:30 to help set that up.  Janet would like to have considered that the donations be donated to the park because they are going to do a special project with the money they make from this.  We can vote on this at the next meeting.  Janet has brochures to pass around.  Janet purchased two commemorative t-shirts that will be given at a drawing.  Jean made a motion that Janet be reimbursed for purchasing the two t-shirts; Bev seconded the motion.  A vote was taken and the motion was carried.

Happy Valley Hills & Hollows.  Claudia said they have rated the new loop at a 4+.  The rating is based on the definition of ratings in the Pathfinder.  Regina read the definitions and discussion was had about walk ratings.

5.         New Walks.

Ric has worked on two walks he would like to do next year, the first Saturday in June, which is National Trails Day.  Both would start at Main City Park.  The 5k would go out the Springwater Trail and up around the new Sports Park and then out by the Springwater Trail High School.  That part of the walk is what the club supported in a Letter of Support given to Ric to get funding to work on that park.  The other walk would go the opposite way and would a more difficult walk.  He has the trails mapped out.  Ric would be a trailmaster on the walk.

Micheil-Ann received an e-mail from Mark White about doing the East Portland Exposition Event saying they would like us to talk to them after July of this year.  That might be a walk we can do next July.

6.         Sanctioning 2010 YRE’s.  The Gorge YRE was discussed.  Susan said the box is not readily available there; there is nothing to show that there is a Volkswalk start point there, and the box is often covered up.  Discussion was had about how to make it more available.  Susan will talk with Betty at the truck stop.  Jean suggested that we have a “Volkswalk Starts Here” type of sticker or sign where our start points are if the AVA boxes are behind a counter or out of sight.  Susan asked about the Bike stamp.  Micheil-Ann has it and will get it to Susan.

Claudia asked about developing the Butler Creek into a 10k walk, which is one of the walks in the Walk There! book.  She has walked it and it was really nice.  Claudia and Judy will develop the walk.

Ric would be willing to work with people either to revise some of our YREs that we have, or start some new ones.  He knows where the trails are in the area.  Discussion was had about various YREs and trails that have just opened up.

7.         Summer picnic.  Discussion was had about the summer picnic.  A suggestion was that for the Arts Walk, we will have the shelter in Main Street Park for our checkpoint until 4.  Regina will check to see if we can keep the shelter for the rest of the day.  There are no BBQ grills there, however.  Janet moved that the picnic be at Main Street Park on July 18 following the walk, provided we can get the shelter for the rest of the day.  Sharon mentioned that the OTSVA luncheon is that same day, but Regina said the picnic would be after the walk, which would be at 4:00.  Discussion was had about bringing food if we don’t have a grill.

Jean said another option would be the shelter at Red Sunset Park which is only $35 and they have grills there.  But the shelter has to be rented by a citizen of Gresham.  Regina will check into the shelter at Main City Park and if we can’t get it, she will check into the shelter at Red Sunset Park.

8.         Questions/Comments.

Nancy Hawes said she would like to see the receipts reflected somewhere for the Snowcap donations.

It was suggested that the phone committee remind everyone to bring food for Snowcap when they call about the meetings.

9.         Springwater Trail.  Judy and Noreen for scheduled for May clean-up.  Regina and Micheil-Ann are scheduled for June.  Rebecca said we are out of gloves in the bag for cleaning the Springwater Trail.

10.       Snowcap.  The club donated 30 lbs. of food for Snowcap in April.

The door prize was donated by Jean and won by Micheil-Ann.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 with everyone enjoying cupcakes.
