In attendance were: Noreen Kruse, Cora Wegner, Marlene Looyens, Alice Carroll, Jim Carroll, Nancy Hawes, Dick Hawes, Carol Cullison, Marilyn Barnhart, Paul Lewis, Janet Winner, Bev Russell, Judy Hamilton, Rebecca Schierman, Claudia Brooks, and Micheil-Ann Gill.
1. Call to Order. President Micheil-Ann Gill welcomed everyone and asked that everyone talk about their last walks.
2. Secretary’s Minutes. There are two corrections in the January minutes: Jo Ferrington’s name is misspelled and Boyd Decker’s name is misspelled. A motion was made by Noreen that the Minutes be approved with the changes, and the motion was seconded by Cora.
3. Treasurer’s Report. Claudia gave the treasurer’s report. Our bank balance as of February 12, 2009 is $1,074.61 balance. Claudia asked Jim to audit the books. He agreed to do so. A motion was made by Bev that the treasurer’s report be approved as given, and the motion was seconded by Dick.
4. AVA/OTSVA Report. Noreen presented the agenda items for the next National Executive Council meeting. Discussion was had, and it was thought that all the items were good except for certification of trailmasters. The club feels trailmasters should not need to be certified.
5. Club Dues. There are still some people who have not paid their club dues.
6. Roster. An updated roster will be e-mailed to everyone.
7. Website Update. Micheil-Ann is attending the classes and working on the website.
8. Memorial for Boyd. We now have $50 from Boyd’s neighbor, $100 from club members, and another $15 received this evening, making a total of $165.00. One brick is $150. The next step up is $250. Claudia checked with the hospital about a tax deduction. If we send each person’s check separate of the East County Wind Walkers, they believe they can get tax deductions to the individual people. Claudia has tried calling Delores to let her know about the brick and let us know how many years Boyd was a member of the club. We need to order the brick as soon as possible.
9. Walk Updates.
· 20th Anniversary Birthday Bash. The brochure was approved by Becky and was sent to The Pathfinder. The brochures have been printed by Regina and Bev handed them out for distribution. Mt. Hood requested a different insurance form than the one originally supplied. The new form has been sent to Mt. Hood. Bev and Marlene thought it would be a good idea to have refreshments at the walk. Bev asked the members of the club to bring cupcakes. Bev said she thought two $10 Starbucks gift certificates should be given away as an incentive for walking. Discussion was had about who would be eligible for the drawing. Claudia suggested using the start cards for all walkers as entries for the drawing. Dick suggested only credit walkers be included in the drawing. Bev said she didn’t know how we would do that, since some people who walk give donations. Discussion was also had about who would pay for the Starbucks gift cards. Dick suggested stores and businesses be contacted for donations. Bev asked who would be going to ask the stores about these gifts. Dick said he would be happy to do that. Dick made a motion that we ask the stores in the area to donate gifts. Janet seconded the motion. A vote was taken but failed. It was suggested that the club would pay for the cards from Starbucks.
· Gresham Arts Festival Walk. Tabled until next meeting.
· Mt. Tabor Centennial Celebration Walk. The brochure has been submitted to the Regional Director and has been approved.
· Happy Valley Hills & Hollows Walk. Claudia is looking into an additional walk. She asked the club what they thought of having a more difficult walk, perhaps a 4 or 5. Paul said that the two walks that we have now are good walks. Claudia said we would keep the 5k at a 2 and the 10k at a 3+, but she thought it would be good to have a more difficult walk for those who wanted more challenge. Discussion was had about different walk levels and the amount of people who do them. Cora asked for clarification of the date for the Happy Valley Hills & Hollows. It is the 24th.
10. Featured Year Round Walk. Micheil-Ann suggested having a boxkeeper volunteer to talk about one of their walks each month at the meeting. Everyone thought it was a good idea. Cora will prepare to talk about the East Portland Walk at the March meeting.
11. New Business.
· Micheil-Ann received an e-mail from Mark White from the East Portland Exposition Celebration. He has asked if we would organize a walk the weekend of July 24, 25 and 26. Discussion was had about whether there was time to organize a walk, who would be trailmasters and workers. Micheil-Ann will e-mail the information to all the members.
· The next Pedestrian & Bike Committee clinic is March 19. Claudia passed around the brochure.
· The Wednesday walkers are doing the Ron Russell walk on March 4. Janet said it would be fun to take a treat to welcome for the Wednesday walkers. Discussion was had about providing treats on March 4. Bev suggested that members of the club could be there to welcome and meet the Wednesday walkers. Paul said there are about 30 people in the Wednesday walkers. Claudia said she would provide treats for them. She will contact Paul and Judy, since they do the Wednesday walks, to arrange having the treats.
· Noreen needs to know whether we should have our Christmas party on Thursday evening or Friday evening. Discussion was had, and it was decided that the party should be on a Friday evening.
· Rebecca asked if anyone in the club has ever done walking that is not an AVA sanctioned event. She said the Willamette Valley Relay is on the order of Portland to Coast and has always been a 36-hour event. They have now changed the rules and it is now a one day event that starts at the center of Champoeg Park. There is no OTSVA recognition for it. She asked if anyone would be interested in doing it. It is put on by the Wonders of Walking, which came out of trying to get more walking events in Oregon. They put on several different events. One is called Stride into Autumn in the Sisters, Oregon area. If anyone is interested, contact Rebecca. The walk is always the same weekend every year.
· Rebecca asked if there is a separate book for each Walk challenge. Judy said yes. If you want to do the Walk Challenge, you buy a book for the A’s. When you finish that book, you mail it in and they will send you the patch. The book can be bought from WalkOregon.org. You can also buy the L books now and do those walks. You have two years to finish a book.
· Claudia said the Senior Hikers are going to do Ladds Addition (about 2.5 miles) on the 27th of February. They are doing Multnomah Falls in March. Contact Claudia if you need more information. They usually do two hikes a month: one on Tuesday, one on Wednesday.
The door prize was furnished by Rebecca and was won by Nancy.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. with everyone enjoying Pistaschio cake provided by Ric.
